April 1-29, 2005. "Paper Politics," an exhibition of politically and socially engaged printmaking presented by Seattle Print Arts and the Phinney Neighborhood Association, showcasing print art which uses themes of social justice and global equity to engage community members in political conversation. It features work by over 170 artists from the US and around the world, and was curated by Josh McPhee, a Chicago-based artist, activist, and author. April 11-June 20 Letterpress Printing: Posters. Amy Redmond Mondays 6:30-9:30 p.m. In this course students of all levels will
create posters (or broadsides, as they're sometimes known) using SVC's collection of lead and wood type and Vandercook cylinder letterpresses. Beginning students will learn how to compose type by hand, create linoleum cuts, and operate the presses, while advanced students will create more elaborate pieces. We'll also submerge ourselves in the history and terminology of letterpress and get to know the local printing community through guest lectures and studio tours. April 19-May 10 Introduction to Letterpress Printing Lisa Hasegawa Learn and become comfortable with the beautiful art of letterpress printing in this beginners course. Students will learn to hand-set metal type, how to lock up a type form for a platen press, and how to ink up, set up and operate the press. we will also explore various methods of printing imagery such as using letterpress cuts, linoleum cuts and wire printing. April 30 & May 1 Photo Etching with Stella Spring and Luanne Bice, 9:00 - 4:00, Learn how to print using an easy and environmentally-safe method. May 14 The Permanently Open Page Paul Johnson Saturday 10am - 5pm
Construct a 3-dimensional book that hangs on the wall instead of sitting
on a shelf. Class begins with a look at books Paul has designed to display
as reliefs or hung as pictures - a unique style that he has pioneered.
Participants spend the rest of the day developing 3D models to incorporate
into a single book form and experiment with different paper-engineering
techniques including pop-up toy theatre forms. Expect to take away an
exciting movable book and many different paper engineering models you can
integrate into wonderful pop-up book and greeting card creations. To
illustrate the workshop, Paul draws on a wide range of his own work in the

May 15 Paul Johnson A Box of Fireworks Sunday 12:30-5pm No one can wrest
more surprise from a few pieces of paper than Paul Johnson can. This class
starts with participants making a paper origami box. Then you'll construct
an extending pop-up book that 'grows' out of the box. As you lift the
book, pages pop out from the sides like a pyrotechnic display! It's great
fun to make and, amazingly, requires only paper, scissors and glue. An

May 19 Letterpress Printing in a Day Jessica Spring 10-5:00 p.m. Longing to get away from your daily routine? This workshop could be the antidote you're looking for, whether you're an experienced printer or just letterpress-curious. Bring your May flowers (and leaves, wire, lace, and lots of other things) and we'll print with them. This one-day workshop introduces experimental letterpress techniques suitable for both novice and experienced printers who would like to focus on creating imagery and texture. We'll print with a press and without, while exploring the serendipitous effects of printing multiple colors over one another. June 6-10 Wooden Coptic Books Daniel Essig 9am-4pm Developed as early as the 4th century, this Ethiopian binding style has withstood the test of time. Although the focus of the workshop will be the use of wood in book structure, students will begin by constructing a small papyrus and paper model that will introduce the binding and serve as a bit of book history. Utilizing hand-powered wood tools, students will first drill, shape and smooth the hardwood covers, and as time and interest allows, experiment with paints, stains and finishes to create a weathered and aged effect. Windows, inlays and closures will also be demonstrated. June 6-17 Paper & Book Intensive, now twenty-one years old, is held in the spring/summer in different regions of the country and attended by individuals who are passionate about the book arts, bookbinding, hand papermaking, conservation, and related fields. June 13-17 Pop-Up Structures & Sculptural Bookbinding Carol Barton 9am-4pm Discover the magic of the sculptural book through an exploration of three-dimensional and pop-up forms. Learn how to use book structure to help convey your message. Students will learn a variety of pop-up structures, beginning with simple non-adhesive cut and fold pop-ups and progress through a series of
more complex glued constructions. Explore several sculptural bindings, including the carousel and tunnel book formats. Both the carousel (a nested series of accordion pleats) and the tunnel book (two accordions holding a series of page frames) are theatrical set-like constructions employing layers of images. Slide shows of historical and artist-made books and discussion of book production techniques. June 20-24 Book Of Fun & Games Extravaganza Julie Chen 9am-4PM This five-day intensive workshop will give participants a detailed introduction to paper engineering techniques and the opportunity to make a book that contains ten moveable and/or three-dimensional mechanisms. Structures will include the magic window shade, the volvelle with a half-scene dissolve, pop-up 3-D theater, and a rotating wheel with moving arm action. Work on visual content for books using Julie's enormous collection of rubber stamps & other simple collage and mark-making techniques, and will leave the workshop with a completed book that will amaze and delight all who see it. The mechanisms covered in this workshop are a collection of some of the best and most popular mechanisms from Julie's ever popular two-day workshop series, Book of Fun and Games Volume I, Volume II, and the long awaited Volume III. July 4-9 An Introduction to Hand Composition, Letterpress Printing, & Design Crispin and Jan Elsted. This six-day intensive workshop will begin with a necessarily brief introduction to type and typographical history, with special attention to the private press. Participants will be guided through design, hand setting, printing, and sewing of a 4- or 8-page pamphlet in an edition of a dozen copies, with detailed instruction in all the skills required. Although no prerequisite is required, those who have had previous printing experience will find the course useful, since instruction will be tailored to individual capabilities and needs. July 11-15 Gocco Printing for Artists Shu-Ju Wang 9AM-4PM Explore the lo- and hi-tech possibilities of silkscreen printing with a Japanese children's toy, the Print Gocco. Using the most common methods of Gocco printing, this workshop will begin with the participants creating single-screen prints. Students will then spend two days exploring hi-tech tools to create multi-layered artwork to print with the Gocco. Photoshop, registration techniques, and full color printing (CMYK) will be discussed in detail. The last two days will focus on a return to stenciling techniques that can be used to get more life out of 'spent' screens, and will also look at ways of making prints that are larger than the size of the print bed.Each participant will create an editioned print for the class exchange portfolio. The workshop will focus on printing on paper, but participants are encouraged to scour their basements
and garages for potential printing surfaces.
