Portland, Oregon good stuff at the IPRC

I really can't say enough good things about the IPRC in Portland. If you're anywhere near, you really should check it out and take advantage of their great classes, zine library (say hi to the zine librarian from us!) and buy lots of zines at Reading Frenzy while you're there!

NEW WORKSHOP: Stencil Making at ACME
(1305 SE 8th Ave. at Main St.)
Sun 5/8, 2:00-5:00pm

How to make and use spray-paint stencils to create everything
from flyers to t-shirts. A demonstration of cutting and
painting as well as a discussion of materials and where to
find them will take place at 2:00. Paint, film and razor blades
will be provided. We suggest bringing anything from home to
paint on. Paper, books, bags, t-shirts, thermos bottles,
bikes, shoes, cars, and some plastics work just fine, but
free to try something new.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS: Amanda and Victor make flyer and poster
art for their band, Point Juncture, Wa, using spray-paint, laser
printer film and anything else they find in Brooklyn's
dumpsters.

Gocco Printing
Wed 5/11, 6:00-9:00pm

This workshop covers the basics of printing on a B6 model Gocco
Printer. The Gocco is a self-contained screenprinting apparatus
that is imported from Japan. The workshop will cover all aspects
of operation, including original artwork preperation, screen
exposure, and printing. Please bring a small (no larger than 3
by 5 in) photocopied or computer printed image or text (that we
will make a print out of!)

Instructor: Alissa Johnson.

Cost: $15 for members / $30 for non-members.

This orientation is open to the general public, new or
prospective users of the IPRC. The available equipment &
resources of the Center will be covered, in addition to the
policies for using the IPRC. And you'll get to see Fred hug the
photocopier. Required for new users. Free! No pre-registration
is required.

NEW WORKSHOP: Beginning Box Making -- The Lidded Box
Sun 5/22, 12:00--5:00pm

For people with no box making experience. Learn the basics by
making a simple lidded box. Measuring, gluing and basic
construction will be covered, as will the techniques for
covering the box with paper or cloth. This class will give you a
solid foundation from which to make increasingly complex boxes.

This is part one of three boxmaking workshops.

BEGINNING: The Lidded Box (5/22)INTERMEDIATE: Dividers, Insets and Trays (6/12)
ADVANCED: The Clamshell Box (6/26)

NEW WORKSHOP: Editing for Zinesters
Wed 5/25, 7:00-9:00pm

Want to learn the mechanics of writing well? Kate Lopresti,
publisher of The Constant Rider, will explain some of the most
common grammatical errors in zinedom, and give you guidelines
and resources to help you avoid the worst of them. Participants
are asked to bring a 1 to 2 page piece for constructive
criticism and revision.
$10 for members / $20 for non-members.

NEW WORKSHOP: Creative Solutions for the Comb Binder
Wed 6/8, 7:00-9:00pm

The workshop will cover the basic process of comb binding, how
to design your project to accomodate the needs of comb binding,
and various designs which take comb binding from mundane to
artistic. Instructor Barb Tetenbaum will show examples of artist
books which use this type of binding. In additon to the IPRC's
plastic comb binder, you will also learn how to use the open
wire 'O-bind' option. You'll leave with a small stack of book
samples and a new appreciation for this oft-maligned style of
binding.

NEW WORKSHOP: Intermediate Box Making--Dividers, Insets and Trays
Sun 6/12, 12:00-5:00pm

For people who have taken begining boxmaking. Build on your
basic box making skills by adding dividers and inset labels to
your boxes. Learn to construct and cover a simple box with a
tray. The second part of the class will be used to plan your
project for the next class in the series, Advanced Box Making.

Mimeograph Basics Workshop
Wed 6/15, 7:30-9:30pm

This workshop covers the basics of printing on AB Dick 411 and
Print-o-Matic A2G mimeographs. We will cover history of the
mimeograph as an independent publishing tool, stencil
preparation techniques, and printing operations. Working in
teams of two, participants will prepare stencils using a
typewriter, lettering guides, and freehand graphics with styli.
Examples of other available technologies and advanced techniques
will be discussed.

Instructor Bios: Dan Hack's writings first appeared in Portland
music rags such as Snipehunt in the late eighties, and he
printed broadsides and chapbooks as The Steam Press through
1992. Currently, he operates Badger In The Bag, which prints
books and other matter exclusively using antiquated office
duplication methods, such as mimeograph, hektograph, and
high-speed AMI duplicators. Jacob Anderson runs the mimeocentric
CD-R label Tape Mountain (www.tapemountain.com), freaks out in
rock bands Celesteville and the Minor Thirds, and plays a lot of
Boggle.

NEW WORKSHOP: Advanced Box Making -- The Clamshell Box
Sun 6/26, 12:00-5:00pm

For people who have taken Intermediate Box making. Learn to
construct and cover the mother of all boxes, the clamshell. Made
up of two trays which fold into one another, the clamshell is
the ideal box for many uses, and has a reputation for being
difficult. Use all your beginning and intermediate box making
skills and more to make your first clamshell box.
