month here at the Center with a lot of change around the space: we've
moved our library into the front room and are in the middle of
reconfiguring the old library to be a dedicated meeting/workshop room.
Yes that's right, no more being locked out of the photocpier room just
because there is a bookbinding workshop. Yea!
Coming up in July we have TWO big fundraising events. Wednesday July
20
at Berbati's We'll be hosting a rock show with Menomena and Point
Juncture,WA (featuring Stencil Workshop Instructiors Victor and
Amanda!!). The show show is a mere six dollars, and you know it's
going
to a good cause. Then that weekend, on Saturday, July 23rd will be the
annual IPRC Yard Sale, and we want your stuff. All household items
that
are clean and in working order (clothing, tools, sporting goods,
kitchen items etc.) are welcome. You can drop them off at the IPRC
wheneer we are open.
The other big news right now is Summer Workshops! We've got a whole
new
slate of classes lined up for July and August, the full details are
below. We'll be offering a couple of computer classes to get users
oriented on some new software we have, a two-part zine making class
for
kids and their parents, a repeat of the popular stencil workshop,
gocco
printing on fabric, and a new letterpress class specifically on making
posters.

ZINE CAMP FOR TEENS Fridays July 8 - July 29, 1-4pm
This workshop format will introduce participants to self-publishing,
exploring each aspect of putting together a zine in a little more
depth. Instructors are experienced zine publishers, and guest speakers
will round out the course to cover all facets of self-publishing.
Historical context will be given, as well as discussion on expression,
identity and independent media, and technical information concerning
the production of a zine. Participants will use materials they have or
create during work times as the basis for creating their own zine. We
will duplicate and distribute the zines in completion of the course.
Pre-registration required. For more information contact

supplies for the workshop, and a one year membership to the IPRC!)
STENCIL ART Tuesday July 7, 6-9pm COST: $5 for members / $10 for
non-members.
Learn how to make and use spray-paint stencils to create everything
from flyers to t-shirts. Victor and Amanda are making some of the most
intricate and beautiful stencils in town and have a variety of tips
for
the novice. The workshop will include a demonstration of cutting and
painting as well as a discussion of materials and where to find them.
Paint, film and razor blades will be provided. We suggest bringing
anything from home to paint on. Paper, books, bags, t-shirts, thermos
bottles, bikes, shoes, cars, and some plastics work just fine, but
feel
free to try something new.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS: Amanda and Victor make flyer and poster art
for
their band, Point Juncture, WA, using spray-paint, laser printer film
and anything else they find in Brooklyn neighborhood's dumpsters.
LOW-TECH PRINTING ON FABRIC (GOCCO) Wednesday july 13, 6-9pm Cost:
$15 formembers and $30 for non-members.
You've always wanted to make t-shirts promoting your zine, right? Here
is your chance to become a star at the upcoming zine symposium by
giving away hand-made memorabilia to your friends and fans. The Gocco
is a self-contained screenprinting apparatus that is imported from
Japan. The workshop will cover all aspects of basic operation,
including original artwork preparation, screen exposure, and the
specifics for printing on fabric. BRING a small (no larger than 3 by 5
inch) image or text to print and a few t-shirts or some fabric to
on.

BASIC LETTERPRESS Sunday July 17, 11am-5pm COST: $30 members/ $60
non-members
Spend an afternoon learning to set lead type and print on a clamshell
press. The nstructor will introduce you to the vocabulary of printing
and a very brief letterpress history while giving pointers on
composition and design. In teams of two, you'll gain hands-on
experience printing and setting type. Walk away with inky fingers, a
well-printed bookmark, calling card, or postcard (that you've printed
yourself!) and a new taste for old technologies. BRING a short quote
or
a few words (up to 100 characters) to be used on your prints.
About the Instructor: Leslie Topness loves 6 pt type and the perfect
shade of ink.
ZINE-MAKING FOR KIDS AND THEIR PARENTS PART 1: Fri July 22, 6-8pm
PART 2: Fri August 5. 6-8pm COST: $40 per family (appropriate for
ages
7&up)
Learn the true, secret story behind the creation of biff, the magazine
for kids and their parents. (check out biff in the iprc library) Make
your own four to eight page zine. Mingle with other zine aficionados.
Go home refreshed.
About the Instructors: Bill Donahue has been a freelance writer in
Portland since 1987. His writing has apeared in The New Yorker, The
New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, Outside, Mother Jones,
DoubleTake, and other magazines. He teaches journalism at The Attic
Writers Workshop and is the CEO of biff world enterprises. Allie
Donahue is currently training to become a pirate. She is an apprentice
to Sir Mahagly Jones, Lord of the Deep Seas.
TRANSFER PRINTING Monday july 25, 6-9pm COST: $15 member/ $30
non-member
Learn and master transfer techniques for fun, and inspiration for
larger projects -- no printmaking experience necessary.
Inspired by
innovative artists such as Paul Klee and Andy Warhol, the transfer
print methods you will learn in this class will be easily produced at
home without special tools, using common art supplies and household
items. We will explore half-a-dozen transfer methods on paper, cloth,
and other surfaces that give a variety of unique results.
About the Instructors: Shannon Buck has been studying printmaking for
the past four years. She has an amazing collection of stamps from
around the world. You can sometimes find her work at Reading Frenzy.
Carye Bye prints under the name Red Bat Press and also runs the online
Bathtub Art Museum. She has a love for art history, museums, and
old-time printing.
THE LETTERPRESS POSTER Sunday July 31, 12-4pm COST: $20 member/ $40
non-member
Bigger is better, at least in this instance. Indulge your latent
desires for big type. Discover the hidden potential of the sign press.
Learn the art of hand brayering ink. Printers unite! But seriously,
the
afternoon promises to be a fun-filled introduction to poster design in
our little letterpress shop and a great opportunity to get back to
printing like you've been meaning to all these months. This workshop
is
open to those who have already taken a letterpress workshop.

ILLUSTRATOR CS Tuesday August 9, 7-9pm COST: $12 members/$25
non-members
This workshop will cover the basics of using Adobe Illustrator CS.
Topics will include: when and why to use Ilustrator, type in
Illustrator, tools, pallets overview, introduction to working with
curves and potential ways to use Illustrator. Basic knowledge of Mac
OS, Photoshop. and Quark, is helpful.
Instructor: Mette Rankin
ADOBE INDESIGN CS Wednesday August 24, 7-9pm COST: $12 members/$25
non-members
This workshop will cover the basics of using Adobe InDesign, a new
design and layout program at the IPRC, InDesign is very much like
Quark
but integrates better with Adobe's other software. It's the perfect
application for doing zine and booklayout on the computer (for those
of
you who are sick of the old scissors and glue stick method). Basic
knowledge of Mac OS, other Adobe programs, or Quark is helpful.
