Portland, Oregon good stuff at the IPRC

I really can't say enough good things about the IPRC in Portland. If you're anywhere near, you really should check it out and take advantage of their great classes, zine library (say hi to the zine librarian from us!) and buy lots of zines at Reading Frenzy while you're there!

NEW WORKSHOP: Stencil Making at ACME
(1305 SE 8th Ave. at Main St.)
Sun 5/8, 2:00-5:00pm

How to make and use spray-paint stencils to create everything
from flyers to t-shirts. A demonstration of cutting and
painting as well as a discussion of materials and where to
find them will take place at 2:00. Paint, film and razor blades
will be provided. We suggest bringing anything from home to
paint on. Paper, books, bags, t-shirts, thermos bottles,
bikes, shoes, cars, and some plastics work just fine, but
free to try something new.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS: Amanda and Victor make flyer and poster
art for their band, Point Juncture, Wa, using spray-paint, laser
printer film and anything else they find in Brooklyn's
dumpsters.

Gocco Printing
Wed 5/11, 6:00-9:00pm

This workshop covers the basics of printing on a B6 model Gocco
Printer. The Gocco is a self-contained screenprinting apparatus
that is imported from Japan. The workshop will cover all aspects
of operation, including original artwork preperation, screen
exposure, and printing. Please bring a small (no larger than 3
by 5 in) photocopied or computer printed image or text (that we
will make a print out of!)

Instructor: Alissa Johnson.

NEW WORKSHOP: Beginning Box Making -- The Lidded Box
Sun 5/22, 12:00--5:00pm

For people with no box making experience. Learn the basics by
making a simple lidded box. Measuring, gluing and basic
construction will be covered, as will the techniques for
covering the box with paper or cloth. This class will give you a
solid foundation from which to make increasingly complex boxes.

This is part one of three boxmaking workshops.

NEW WORKSHOP: Editing for Zinesters
Wed 5/25, 7:00-9:00pm

Want to learn the mechanics of writing well? Kate Lopresti,
publisher of The Constant Rider, will explain some of the most
common grammatical errors in zinedom, and give you guidelines
and resources to help you avoid the worst of them. Participants
are asked to bring a 1 to 2 page piece for constructive
criticism and revision.

NEW WORKSHOP: Creative Solutions for the Comb Binder
Wed 6/8, 7:00-9:00pm

The workshop will cover the basic process of comb binding, how
to design your project to accomodate the needs of comb binding,
and various designs which take comb binding from mundane to
artistic. Instructor Barb Tetenbaum will show examples of artist
books which use this type of binding. In additon to the IPRC's
plastic comb binder, you will also learn how to use the open
wire 'O-bind' option. You'll leave with a small stack of book
samples and a new appreciation for this oft-maligned style of
binding.

NEW WORKSHOP: Intermediate Box Making--Dividers, Insets and Trays
Sun 6/12, 12:00-5:00pm

For people who have taken begining boxmaking. Build on your
basic box making skills by adding dividers and inset labels to
your boxes. Learn to construct and cover a simple box with a
tray. The second part of the class will be used to plan your
project for the next class in the series, Advanced Box Making.

Mimeograph Basics Workshop
Wed 6/15, 7:30-9:30pm

This workshop covers the basics of printing on AB Dick 411 and
Print-o-Matic A2G mimeographs. We will cover history of the
mimeograph as an independent publishing tool, stencil
preparation techniques, and printing operations. Working in
teams of two, participants will prepare stencils using a
typewriter, lettering guides, and freehand graphics with styli.
Examples of other available technologies and advanced techniques
will be discussed.

Instructor Bios: Dan Hack's writings first appeared in Portland
music rags such as Snipehunt in the late eighties, and he
printed broadsides and chapbooks as The Steam Press through
1992. Currently, he operates Badger In The Bag, which prints
books and other matter exclusively using antiquated office
duplication methods, such as mimeograph, hektograph, and
high-speed AMI duplicators. Jacob Anderson runs the mimeocentric
CD-R label Tape Mountain (www.tapemountain.com), freaks out in
rock bands Celesteville and the Minor Thirds, and plays a lot of
Boggle.

NEW WORKSHOP: Advanced Box Making -- The Clamshell Box
Sun 6/26, 12:00-5:00pm

For people who have taken Intermediate Box making. Learn to
construct and cover the mother of all boxes, the clamshell. Made
up of two trays which fold into one another, the clamshell is
the ideal box for many uses, and has a reputation for being
difficult. Use all your beginning and intermediate box making
skills and more to make your first clamshell box.

It seems like everyone has a digital camera and an inkjet printer these days. Wouldn’t it be great to get all these great photos off your hard drive and into your hands? Create one-of-a-kind or limited edition artist books using your own digital or traditional photographs. We’ll talk about photo selection and computer design considerations as well as bookbinding and editioning techniques. Participants will create several blank models of artist book structures so they can later create their own editions. No bookbinding experience necessary and all materials and handouts provided.

Fee: $120 and lab fee of $15.00

Found Narratives & Altered Books:
Creating Your Own Book Works Using Found Materials
Wed 4/13, 6:00pm-9:00pm
This workshop focuses on ways of using found materials to create
new visual narratives, particularly ways in which altering books
or other found materials can be a subversive act that challenges
the materials being appropriated. To stimulate ideas, participants
will be shown examples of altered book structures. Students will learn
techniques of stenciling, over-printing, deconstructing, reassembling,
collage, and cutting, with a particular emphasis on surface design and
altered forms.
SUPPLIES: Students should bring a book that they want to alter, or
other found materials such as: photographs, drawings, letters, etc.
INSTRUCTOR BIO: Elysa Voshell taught creative writing at the Ogontz
Avenue Art Company in Philadelphia (an arts education program for
'at-risk' high-school age students who had left the public school
system). As an artist-in-residence in book arts at Oregon College
of Art & Craft, she currently participates in BFA and
post-baccalaureate critiques.

Pinhole Photography

Learn how to make and use a pinhole camera, the simplest and yet most
subtle of photographic devices. Then develop your prints right here

Issue 15: Big Books

Has been starting to hit all over the world. If you don't have your copy yet, you'll have it within the next few weeks (bulk mail seems to take up to six weeks thesedays, although we've had reports from Oregon, Washington, and California of the magazine arriving already!)

And, if you get dog eared at your local store, most should be starting to receive it now, too. If your favorite store doesn't carry dog eared, ask them to!

May 14 The Permanently Open Page Paul Johnson Saturday 10am - 5pm
Construct a 3-dimensional book that hangs on the wall instead of sitting
on a shelf. Class begins with a look at books Paul has designed to display
as reliefs or hung as pictures - a unique style that he has pioneered.
Participants spend the rest of the day developing 3D models to incorporate
into a single book form and experiment with different paper-engineering
techniques including pop-up toy theatre forms. Expect to take away an
exciting movable book and many different paper engineering models you can
integrate into wonderful pop-up book and greeting card creations. To
illustrate the workshop, Paul draws on a wide range of his own work in the

May 15 Paul Johnson A Box of Fireworks Sunday 12:30-5pm No one can wrest
more surprise from a few pieces of paper than Paul Johnson can. This class
starts with participants making a paper origami box. Then you'll construct
an extending pop-up book that 'grows' out of the box. As you lift the
book, pages pop out from the sides like a pyrotechnic display! It's great
fun to make and, amazingly, requires only paper, scissors and glue. An

May 19 Letterpress Printing in a Day Jessica Spring 10-5:00 p.m. Longing to get away from your daily routine? This workshop could be the antidote you're looking for, whether you're an experienced printer or just letterpress-curious. June 6-10 Wooden Coptic Books Daniel Essig 9am-4pm Developed as early as the 4th century, this Ethiopian binding style has withstood the test of time. Although the focus of the workshop will be the use of wood in book structure, students will begin by constructing a small papyrus and paper model that will introduce the binding and serve as a bit of book history. Utilizing hand-powered wood tools, students will first drill, shape and smooth the hardwood covers, and as time and interest allows, experiment with paints, stains and finishes to create a weathered and aged effect. Windows, inlays and closures will also be demonstrated. Learn how to use book structure to help convey your message. Students will learn a variety of pop-up structures, beginning with simple non-adhesive cut and fold pop-ups and progress through a series of
more complex glued constructions. Explore several sculptural bindings, including the carousel and tunnel book formats. June 20-24 Book Of Fun & Games Extravaganza Julie Chen 9am-4PM This five-day intensive workshop will give participants a detailed introduction to paper engineering techniques and the opportunity to make a book that contains ten moveable and/or three-dimensional mechanisms. Structures will include the magic window shade, the volvelle with a half-scene dissolve, pop-up 3-D theater, and a rotating wheel with moving arm action. Work on visual content for books using Julie's enormous collection of rubber stamps & other simple collage and mark-making techniques, and will leave the workshop with a completed book that will amaze and delight all who see it. This six-day intensive workshop will begin with a necessarily brief introduction to type and typographical history, with special attention to the private press. Participants will be guided through design, hand setting, printing, and sewing of a 4- or 8-page pamphlet in an edition of a dozen copies, with detailed instruction in all the skills required. July 11-15 Gocco Printing for Artists Shu-Ju Wang 9AM-4PM Explore the lo- and hi-tech possibilities of silkscreen printing with a Japanese children's toy, the Print Gocco. Using the most common methods of Gocco printing, this workshop will begin with the participants creating single-screen prints. Students will then spend two days exploring hi-tech tools to create multi-layered artwork to print with the Gocco. Photoshop, registration techniques, and full color printing (CMYK) will be discussed in detail. The last two days will focus on a return to stenciling techniques that can be used to get more life out of 'spent' screens, and will also look at ways of making prints that are larger than the size of the print bed.Each participant will create an editioned print for the class exchange portfolio. The workshop will focus on printing on paper, but participants are encouraged to scour their basements
and garages for potential printing surfaces.
